Pilea Plant Propagation

What do I love about plants? I love that most of them can so easily be propagated! It’s really quite simple and through a little trial and error one can become a master at just about any plant. Just kidding. Propagating can be difficult. It can be frustrating and infuriating after spending time caring for a plant to have it shrivel up and die, or worse, become mushy and rotten. My recent attempt? This beautiful Pilea baby that I snipped off an even more lovely mother plant.

So, how am I going about propagating this Pilea? I went ahead with some nice clean scissors (I used kitchenaid) and snipped the root about half an inch under the dirt line. I then prepared an even blend of 2/3 soil and 1/3 perlite. I lightly moistened the soil once it was in a small terra cotta pot and then placed in my cutting. I set the root about 1 inch into the soil and made sure it stood up without any extra support. I’ve set this baby Pilea in medium sun exposure, where it gets about 4 hours of direct morning sun and then shade the rest of the day and evening.

I have my fingers crossed and I’ll check back in once I notice some roots forming so you can follow along!
